I've tried in the past and my experiences have all been the same. I don't like it because it seems as if men all had a directory of women.
To the point where they can't focus. If they found someone the like they were still online flipping through the directory of women, it's like a numbers game to most men. It's a numbers game for anyone.
The saying "you have to kiss frogs before you meet your prince" definitely applies to online dating. That said, I have had several good relationships from it, the last one lasting 3 years, online dating yay or nay. It is very important not to get your hopes up about anyone before meeting, just go into it with an attitude of adventure and fun and no attachment to outcome.
I also meet just about anyone who doesn't turn me off in some way - I think many people want a guarantee that you'll be a match before they'll commit to meeting, but if your first meet is for coffee, etc, my opinion is just try even guys you aren't sure you'll like, all you have to lose is 30 minutes of time and you never know. I also don't initiate contact, online dating yay or nay, I let guys do that.
Go for it if you're a woman. If you're a guy, hope you're attractive. I liked it I met some great men from it. Some I still talk to since my 20's. Some I would of never knew they lived so close to me if it wasn't for online dating. everyone i know who's done it has had a generally positive experience. my best online dating yay or nay and my brother both met their future wives through online dating. I just recently met the woman I'm dating online, online dating yay or nay.
I had been dating for 14 months before I took down my profiles. The advice I can give is that it's work. Now that I've met someone that enjoys spending time with me and makes plans to see me; all the bad dates up to this point are moot. It's like once you meet someone you enjoy spending time with, it cleans the slate of the past dates.
I say go for it and just see what happens. Low expectations work best and hope that you meet someone that truly enjoys your company. If a man or woman is truly attractive, then they will be capable of obtaining first dates all day long.
But IMO, due to IME, and much convo with people IRL that are successful and unsuccessful online, if you arent attractive, online dating is a pain in the butt. It really is more work than it's worth in this scenerio. One would be better off getting a hobby and spending time with friends, networking, and educating themself.
These IRL interactions will prove more fruitful for dating as it allows people to get to know you as a human being, as opposed to an online profile advertising ones chiseled jaw line, phd in medical science, and duck face.
